Is it the party leaders, the TV cameras, or the debate moderator(s)?
In my opinion, many TV debates involve a lot of talking, little listening, and too much talking at the same time. I find it unappealing to listen to, difficult to follow, and certainly not a debate at all.
Yet, there’s another way. In the run-up to the elections, I was asked to provide the audio for five radio debates. No party leaders, no TV cameras. I found that in the right circumstances it is possible: listening and responding to each other, debating on the merits, and minimal accusations. And that’s what a real debate is.
